Derrick was a late bloomer by musicians standards having taken up bass at age 19. Although not raised in a musical family, there always seemed to be a source of music in the house to both intrigue and inspire him. As a youngster it was (Classic) Country that played from the kitchen radio during the 60's and then pop rock seemed to take over his time and attention during the 70's thanks to transistor radios, home stereos and of course car sound systems. So by the time a bass guitar had finally been procured there was a never ending list of songs just waiting to be learned by the eager budding bassist. First came his membership in the 80's and 90's basement and garage bands of the Edmonton area followed by his co-founding of the local Reggae band Soulja Fyah in the early 2000's Those progressions gave way to the formation of the hit playing ensemble Capital Newz in the 2010's where he first met Laurie. When that group came to an end two different original projects were spawned. Taking Medication performed a sort of Psychedelic Pop and the other was Corner Rooster which produced a Blues Rock mixture. Over the many years since the pawn shop purchase of that first Gibson bass, he has played many genres in an effort to satisfy his craving for diverse musical styles. And beginning in 2024 he once again has joined forces with Laurie and her select choice of musical members to form The Stevie Project. Look out 2025 and beyond!
